The debate is loud. One camp says AI will replace SDRs entirely. The other says it is all hype. Both are wrong.
What AI does better
- Research speed - An AI agent can research 200 leads in the time it takes a human to research 5
- Consistency - Every message is researched and personalized. No bad days, no shortcuts
- Signal detection - Monitors funding rounds, job postings, and social activity 24/7
- Cost - An AI SDR costs 79-149 per month. A human SDR costs 3,000-5,000 plus management overhead
What humans do better
- Complex objection handling - When a prospect pushes back hard, human nuance still wins
- Relationship building - Long sales cycles with multiple stakeholders need human touch
- Creative deal-making - Custom pricing, partnerships, strategic accounts
- Brand building - A founder selling personally builds trust that no automation can match
The practical answer
For early-stage founders (pre-Series A, no sales team), AI SDRs are the right choice. You cannot afford a human SDR, and the volume of outreach needed is too high for a founder to do manually.
Once you reach product-market fit and have a repeatable sales process, a hybrid model works best: AI handles the top of the funnel (signal detection, research, first touch), and a human closes.
